All Saint’s Church Concert, Oystermouth

What a tremendous concert last Saturday at All Saints Church in Oystermouth.  The evening had been organised by Henry Gilbert The High the Sheriff of West Glamorgan as a fundraising event for his charity Crimebeat and the RNLI Mumbles Lifeboat.  However, as a Friend of LARS it was his intention also to raise the profile of LARS in the Mumbles area.

Guard of Honour

Adding to the excitement a civic party from the city of s’Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, led by their Mayor and Chief Executive Jan de Wit, was visiting Wales and were invited to the concert by the High Sheriff.  This was particularly pleasing for us as LARS has a close association with s’Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) having visited the city on two occasions to participate in their annual Liberation Commemorations.

In the afternoon our guests were welcomed by the Lord Mayor of Swansea, HM Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, The High Sheriff, Lt Col David Mathias DL and other dignitaries along with Trustees and Ambassadors of LARS.   They were shown around the impressive Council Chamber and the Brangwyn Panels and gifts were exchanged.  At the Guild Hall and at the church afterwards a guard of honour had been assembled to welcome our guests.  The guests and the audience were treated to an evening of first class music – the standing ovation said it all!  At the end of the night a roof-raising rendition of the Dutch National Anthem ‘The Wilhelmus’ was performed with the intricate words learned by the choir and LARS.

Packed Church

The church was jam-packed; stand-by plastic seats were retrieved from every nook and cranny!  In the concert LARS shared the stage with the world famous Morriston Orpheus Choir under the baton of Joy Amman Davies with guest accompanist Helen Roberts.  The choir was superb! Our compère was the ever-popular Mal Pope who held together the night in his own inimitable style.

We had 10 LARS singers at the Church; unfortunately Samuel Morris, due to a chest infection was unable to perform.  He was very disappointed but was eager to be there to offer support and show his respects to our friends from Den Bosch, where he had visited with LARS last year.

Staging New Members

We were delighted to stage for the first time two new members of LARS: Nikkila Thomas and James Oakely, both from Llanelli. Nikkila is studying on the Vocal and Opera course at the Royal College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, she came on board in December.  James Oakley had only joined LARS the Wednesday before, he has only turned 15 and is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Y Strade; he is our youngest member.

Excellent Performances

Our singers on the night were Sydney Richards, Neve Summers, Callum Howells, James Oakley and Nikkila Thomas who performed in the first half with Osian Clarke, Joseph Cavalli-Price and Keely Morgan performing in the second half.   The audience were treated to a very varied programme which dove-tailed well into the programme of The Orpheus.  Keely and Osian also performed solo with the choir and Sydney sang a duet with Callum.  We also gave an opportunity for Joe to accompany Keely.  All our LARS singers excelled themselves on the night.  Our three musical advisors were with us in not only supporting our singers but also provided excellent accompaniment.
