It was a remarkable visit for our four LARS singers: Keely Morgan, Samuel Wyn-Morris, Joseph Cavalli-Price and Osian Clarke and accompanist Andrew Pike – they all did us and Wales very proud! Such was its success that LARS has received a return invitation to once again participate in the Commemorations after 2020.
LARS arrived in Den Bosch on the Friday (27th October) ready for a full day of events on the Saturday. It started in the morning with a very moving service at the 53rd Welsh Memorial followed by the Liberation Concert in the evening at Den Bosch’s theatre. In the concert Keely, Sam, Joe and Osian were outstanding in their performances and each one commented that it was one of the most memorable they had ever performed. The rapturous applause and reaction of the 700-strong audience certainly was testament to that. Our singers were accompanied and supported by Andy with Jo also assisting with the accompaniment.
I’d like to share a message which I have just received from Henk Van der Sanden, the Musical Director of the mixed choir of s’Hertogenbosch:
‘I want to say thank you so much for being with us in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The celebration at the Welsh-memorial in the morning and the concert in the Theatre at the Parade in the evening was a wonderful performance. From the bottom of my heart: THANKS.’ I think this says it all!
We have accumulated a plethora of photographs and have also obtained recordings of the individual performances; we will upload onto the website ASAP.
LARS was the guest of the City of Den Bosch and the choir. The importance of the invitation was clearly apparent as the Chief Executive of the city Jan de Wit spent a great deal of time during our visit with LARS along with involving himself whole-heartedly over the weekend with the Liberation Commemorations. On the Monday we met him for the final time when he proudly showed around the Welsh Room which is located in the Town Hall and then around the beautiful state rooms with walled tapestries.
The visit was a humbling experience and showed in what high regard the people of Wales are held.
I know LARS is very grateful to Colonel David Mathias for arranging this memorable visit and personally I’d like to thank Susan and Peter Roberts, David and Sue Mathias, Alison and Andy, without their support Holland would not have been possible.
